MAY DECEMBER Natalie Portman joins Julianne Moore and director Todd Haynes ( Far from Heaven ), who reunite for this provocative drama inspired by the Mary Kay Letourneau scandal of the ‘90s. Portman plays an actress preparing for a role, who travels to study the life of a woman (Moore) whose 23-year relationship with her husband began when he was 13 years old. Met with critical acclaim, the film tackles its difficult subject as a character study that is both uncomfortable and compelling. THE ZONE OF INTEREST Hailed as a masterpiece, The Zone of Interest arrives following a slew of accolades, including a BAFTA for 'Best International Feature Film' and three Oscar nominations. It tells the story of an Auschwitz commandant and his wife, who strive to build their dream life beside the notorious concentration camp. It is a profound and enthralling - albeit heavy - story that explores humanity and peoples’ complicity in horrific crimes while leading normal lives. Incredible stuff; highly recommended. 1/5/24 DRAMA
MADAME WEB The popular Marvel character of the same name enters Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (the fourth entry), boasting a kick-ass all-girl cast including Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor. Serving as an origin story, the movie follows Johnson’s Cassie Webb, a paramedic who must confront her past to save three young women from a mysterious adversary who wants to kill them before they turn into future Spider-Women. BEFORE DAWN Before Dawn , in the tradition of Gallipoli and The Light Horsemen , tells the story of a young farm boy joining World War I, unaware of its horrors. The film authentically embodies the ANZAC spirit, with Levi Miller ( Better Watch Out ) delivering a career-defining performance. Notable support comes from Ed Oxenbould, Stephen Peacocke, and Travis Jeffery. Told with depth, Before Dawn offers a compelling narrative of the diggers’ sacrifice and bravery. 26/5/24 Superhero STEELBOOK WICKED LITTLE LETTERS Wicked Little Letters is a cheeky film based on true events in 1920s rural England. It follows a series of profanity-laden letters sent to residents of a conservative seaside town, causing a national scandal. Starring Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Timothy Spall, Gemma Jones, and Anjana Vasan, it's recommended for fans of Calendar Girls and The Full Monty - but is not for the prudish. 22/5/24 War

JERICHO RIDGE Will Gilbey, the writer of Rise of the Foot Soldier , makes his directorial debut in this impressive nail-biter that’s best described as John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 as if remade by the Coen brothers. It tells the story of a policewoman manning a remote sheriff's office at night, fending off violent attackers hellbent on breaking in. This is sharp filmmaking with attention to detail, and one of the year’s most underrated releases.
BAGHEAD This chilling horror film follows a shape-shifting creature capable of assuming the forms of the deceased, conveying messages to their loved ones with grotesque consequences. The film arrives in the wake of the similarly themed Talk to Me , yet it's an adaptation of its own earlier short film, bearing the same title. There’s room for both movies in all respectable horror collections, and Baghead comes bearing its own goods.
