Gone are the days of boiling baby bottles on the stove or relying on low-res monitors to check on baby. Now tech is making life just that little bit easier for parents of newborns. Words Bec Summer

W hile sitting in a food court recently, we overheard a conversation at an adjacent table. An expectant mother was batting away suggestions of how hard life would be when the newborn arrived. “I’m not bothered about sleep deprivation,” the mother replied. “I barely sleep now, so I’ll be fine.” We stared into our burrito, casting our mind back to those early years of parenthood, smiled, and whispered, “Good luck!” The fact is, of course, nothing can prepare you for the arrival of your firstborn. Between the sleep deprivation, exploding nappies, and the general anxiety of not actually knowing what to do as a new parent, you’ll be constantly wondering what on earth you did with your time before baby arrived. However, in the smart home space,

used and still widely appreciated. But as consumer tech evolved from step counters on the wrist to smart home hubs that control the home with voice commands, the baby space would inevitably follow suit. Search the internet, and you can find practically anything to assist in the journey. Robot nannies, AI-driven digital babies for preparing parents, and even ‘gas relievers’ deployed like a human exhaust pipe are all readily available. But if you sift through the absurd, there are some truly ingenious devices that are worth a closer look. Smart bassinets and cribs These beds use sensors to detect

when a baby stirs from sleep or cries. They can automatically vibrate, rock or play white noise to help soothe the baby back to sleep.

So, what’s out there? There was a time when electric breast pumps were considered the pinnacle of baby tech. And rightly so. These are still widely

technology has evolved to ease the stress of day-to-day living. Automated support is now on hand to assist parents navigating the tricky newborn stage.
