# 1 MY FIRST ALBUM

Lately I’ve had Unreal, Unearth; Unending by Hozier on repeat. His storytelling and soulful voice are always captivating, but this album feels especially immersive. The perfect blend of folk, pop, and poetic lyricism creates such a rich listening experience that I keep coming back to. Each song offers something new to appreciate. My favorite song off the album being Abstract ( Psychopomp ). What’s your all-time favourite album and why? My favourite all-time album is Sounds Good Feels Good by 5 Seconds of Summer. This album stands out to me because of its raw emotion, powerful lyrics, and the way it perfectly encapsulates the highs and lows of youth. It’s the kind of album that is still as impactful to me as the very first listen. My favourite song being Outer Space/Carry on. Do you have a vinyl collection? If so, how did it begin, and expand? Yes, I’ve built up a collection of over 100 records in the past year. It all started with Only by the Night by Kings of Leon, which was my first vinyl and sparked my love for collecting. Working at JB Hi-Fi has really reignited my passion for music and specifically physical media. Recently I also got all of my Pop’s old ‘70’s records, which has been an amazing way to connect with music that he loved and hear his stories of when he purchased them. What do you enjoy most about working in music at JB? What I love most about working in music at JB is being surrounded by people who share my passion for music. Getting to talk about albums, recommend artists, and help people discover their next favourite song never feels like work – it’s something I genuinely enjoy. There is also a thrill in seeing someone’s excitement when they find exactly what they were looking for or when they take a chance on a new release based on a reccomendation. Being a part of a space that keeps music alive in a physical format, where fans can connect with it beyond streaming makes the job even more rewarding.

The first album I ever bought was Tina Turner’s Private Dancer on cassette, featuring What’s Love Got to Do with It, Better Be Good to Me, Show Some Respect, and Let’s Stay Together . I was about seven; the album had been out quite a few years, but I was obsessed with Tina and John Williamson at the time. A funny combination looking back. I bought the album from somewhere in Hay NSW, with money I’d saved up from doing little jobs for Mum – cleaning the car, mowing the lawn, etc. I was very excited to show all of my cousins and play it over and over in the car on long drives with Mum and my brother Luke. I don’t have that album anymore on cassette and haven’t listened to it for a while, but I still have enormous admiration for Tina Turner. WILLIAM CRIGHTON

What’s an early, cherished music memory? One of my earliest and most cherished memories is sitting around the campfire with my dad as he played his guitar. There was always something magical about those moments and where I understood the power of music to bring people together and tell stories that stick with you for a lifetime. Which recent album do you currently have on repeat?

In the hotseat is Aussie star BAKER BOY, who is touring this month.

Five words to describe yourself:

What would be your Hard Quiz expert subject? I don’t know, maybe One Piece anime. Song you wish you’d written? Hanumankind’s Big Dawgs . If you weren’t a rock star, what would you be? I was a dancer before I was a musician, so probably still that.

Last album you bought? 50 Cent – The Massacre . I got it second-hand from Tower Records in Shibuya when I was over there a few months ago. What’s the most ridiculous item you’ve ever put on your rider? Honestly, nothing really; I’m not that guy. I do get boiled eggs, which everyone thinks is hilarious, but I eat them, so not that ridiculous!

Your funeral song? Akatsuki – the theme song from Naruto Shippuden . Happiness is… Home with my dog and partner and ideally eating mud crab.

Proud, Blak, Deadly, Yol ŋ u Boy. Your all-time favourite album? J. Cole’s The Off-Season . What did your most memorable school report say? Honestly, I don’t think I ever read it! But I always did good in school… probably said I was annoying, though.
