MEO2019-SHOWGUIDE

Game on in Melbourne

From retro arcade classics to indie game developers and next-gen tech, if ever there was a home for gaming in Australia, it’s Melbourne. The undisputed capital of creativity’s reputation as a mecca for gaming has flourished in recent years, with Melbourne home to more than 150 games studios, making up 53% of the Australian industry. With collaborative co-working spaces specifically for game developers like The Arcade and key cultural institutions such as ACMI X offering workshops and interactive spaces that celebrate

all things video games, Melbourne is seen to be leading the way when it comes to game development and education. Melbourne was also the stage for the largest live esports event ever held in Australasia when the Melbourne Esports Open made its debut in 2018. The event will look to 1UP itself in 2019, taking over the city’s iconic sport’s precinct and filling the likes of Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and Melbourne Arena between 31 August - 1 September.

When in town, you might be surprised to discover just how video game culture has taken some traditional Melbourne favourites to the next-level. Places like Go Marché and 8Bit combine the city’s love for good food and games, while venues such as Zen Gaming Lounge and Zero Latency offer interactive live gaming experiences.
