Welcome
The Melbourne Esports Open debuted last year as the biggest celebration of competitive gaming that this country has ever seen. With some of the best esports professionals in the country living in Melbourne, and the city’s history as Australia’s home of sport, there was no better location for us to debut Australasia’s biggest festival of esports. The crew at ESL are all passionate gamers at heart, so working on an event like the Melbourne Esports Open is a labour of love. Years ago, the thought of an esports event taking over Melbourne & Olympic Parks for two days was not just unheard of, but borderline ridiculous. Fast forward to today, and we’re able to bring together tens of thousands of esports fans to celebrate all things competitive video gaming. Whether you’re a PC gamer, prefer couch-coop or like to play on the move – with over 15 open tournaments, the Melbourne Esports Open will have something for you this year. I’ll be in the crowd cheering for our local representatives over the course of the weekend, and encourage every esports fan in Australia to attend and show their support!
TEG Live is proud to present the return of the Melbourne Esports Open. Last year’s inaugural showing connected 12,000 dedicated esports fans to the event, and we can’t wait to see the crowds back at Melbourne & Olympic Parks in 2019. This year’s event will once again be headlined by the League of Legends OPL Final (Riot Games) and the Overwatch Contenders Australia Finals (Blizzard Entertainment) in Rod Laver Arena. Following the success of the inaugural Melbourne Esports Open in 2018, the 2019 event will expand to include activities across Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne Arena and Grand Slam Oval, including an expanded JB Hi-Fi Game On Zone with an unprecedented range of ‘first to play’ in Australia game titles. In an Australian first, a North American based Overwatch League (OWL) team, Washington Justice, will be the first OWL team to play in an international event, competing at this year’s Melbourne Esports Open in a showmatch against the winning team of Overwatch Contenders Australia Season 2. With more of the best esports titles joining the event this year, there’s something for every gamer. In 2019, the event is bigger and better and we’re excited for you to check it out. TEG Live would like to thank the Victorian Government along with its tourism and major events agency, Visit Victoria, for their support, along with event partners JB Hi-Fi and Fairfax Events & Entertainment.

Game on in Melbourne
From retro arcade classics to indie game developers and next-gen tech, if ever there was a home for gaming in Australia, it’s Melbourne. The undisputed capital of creativity’s reputation as a mecca for gaming has flourished in recent years, with Melbourne home to more than 150 games studios, making up 53% of the Australian industry. With collaborative co-working spaces specifically for game developers like The Arcade and key cultural institutions such as ACMI X offering workshops and interactive spaces that celebrate
all things video games, Melbourne is seen to be leading the way when it comes to game development and education. Melbourne was also the stage for the largest live esports event ever held in Australasia when the Melbourne Esports Open made its debut in 2018. The event will look to 1UP itself in 2019, taking over the city’s iconic sport’s precinct and filling the likes of Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and Melbourne Arena between 31 August - 1 September.
When in town, you might be surprised to discover just how video game culture has taken some traditional Melbourne favourites to the next-level. Places like Go Marché and 8Bit combine the city’s love for good food and games, while venues such as Zen Gaming Lounge and Zero Latency offer interactive live gaming experiences.

The Dire Wolves win the OPL Grand Final at Melbourne Esports Open 2018
League of Legends Oceanic Pro League Finals
The Oceanic Pro League features the best League of Legends players from Australia, New Zealand and surrounding islands competing for the regional championship. In 2015 it became the first professional esports league in Oceania. Historically, both The Chiefs and Dire Wolves have won 4 splits of the OPL, while Bombers (Essendon Football Club’s League of Legends team) took out the first split this year. Now the OPL is seeing one of its most competitive splits ever and with fierce competition, there’s no telling who might take out the Grand Final at MEO. The OPL final at The Melbourne Esports Open takes place on August 31, with the winner going to Europe to compete in the coveted League of Legends World Championship.

The JB Hi-Fi Game On Zone
What is the best part of the JB Hi-Fi Game On Zone? With so much on offer over the two days of MEO, it really is a tough question. Well, let’s start with the games. At last year’s event, gamers got a first look at the PS4 exclusive, Spider-Man , and the title that was in high demand in the Zone. This year there’s a handful of first-to-play in Australia exclusives including Marvel’s Iron Man VR, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint and Borderlands 3. These will all be playable at the Game On Zone! But play opportunities won’t just be restricted to the above games: the biggest publishers in the industry will have a booth presence at the Game On Zone, so there will be literally something to play for gamers of all ages. Add to that an exciting range of the latest PC gaming hardware and essential accessories and all your bases are covered. But wait, there’s more. Do you want the opportunity to meet and greet with your favourite esports athletes? You can do that at the Zone, too, with some of the biggest names in esports making themselves available to meet fans and sign autographs. And if you fancy yourself as a competitive gamer, then the ESL stage at the Game On Zone is where you’ll want to be. There are a number of open tournament opportunities throughout the weekend that anyone with an MEO ticket can enter with the chance to win some awesome prizes. See you in the Zone! Ghost Recon: Breakpoint
W hat does Ghost Recon mean to you? For us, it’s all about closing the curtains, locking the door, sticking the headphones on and becoming totally immersed in the compelling worlds that Ubisoft’s studios create. The good news is that the latest in the 18-year-old Ghost Recon series,

What a game, what a legacy, what a welcome return! Yes, not only is Borderlands 3 coming in September, but it will be another title at the Game On Zone that MEO attendees will have the first opportunity in Australia to play. The shooter looter that helped pave the way for Destiny and The Division is back with its unique art style and slick handling. Borderlands 3 will feature four-player co-op, with players choosing from one of four new Vault Hunter classes each versed with a different skill set. It will purportedly feature over one billion different guns in the game. From what we’ve played so far at E3, Gearbox Software have built on the successful formula delivering even more chaotic gameplay, relentless waves of enemies, lashings of random

A closer look at a handful of gaming laptop options from three big-name brands that are all built to keep you in the game when you’re out and about. Gaming grunt on the go
Three of the biggest names in gaming laptops will be showing their wicked wares at MEO. Kicking off with Dell’s offering, the goal of its Alienware Area-51m is simple: a mobile desktop. This means not just initial innards configuration, but also clever upgrade pathways that include CPU and GPU to keep your
digital audio output to keep the soundscape in tune with the eye candy.
If splicing gaming power with portability is more your jam, the Alienware M15 is worth a gander. For a gaming laptop, the M15 is light and thin,
albeit still with a 15-inch screen so you don’t have to squint while gaming. A PCIe M.2 solid-state drive means faster loading times for Windows, apps and, of course, games. The M15 is also proudly VR ready; opt for the higher-end variants, and you score a 144Hz display
gaming laptop up-to-spec for longer. Even at stock levels, a 20-series Nvidia graphics card on a 17-inch display keeps the ray-tracing-powered visual fidelity appropriately gorgeous. There’s also 7.1

to take advantage of those frame-rate gains.
If budget is paramount, consider the Dell G3 range. You can save gamer bucks on the OG 15- inch and 17-inch models, but it’s worth investing in the refreshed 15-inch variant. This newer model starts with the screen: a Full HD, LED- backlit beauty with a wide viewing angle. You can turbo-boost performance with a speedy key combo and quick charge the lappy. There’s also a generously sized 512GB M.2 PCIe SSD to help you access more games, faster.
Omen X25
For something truly unique, consider the gaming laptop-first dual-screen HP OMEN X 2S. As you’d expect, the main screen is up top and boasts a 240Hz refresh rate on a G-Sync panel, which means more fluid on-screen action. A 20-series GPU helps match
For more affordable gaming-on- the-go, ASUS has options to please both Intel fans and

AMD devotees. The ASUS ROG G531GT-AL017T has an Intel i7-9750H CPU with a GeForce GTX
1650 GPU for decent performance on a budget. There’s also a 512GB PCIe M.2 SSD and a 120Hz display to keep you competitive online. AMD players should have a gander at the ASUS ROG GA502DU-AL025T. This gaming lappy combines a Ryzen 7 CPU with a GeForce 1660 Ti and a 512GB SSD. Translation: enough grunt to find that gaming sweet spot between fidelity and frames (which you absolutely want with its 120Hz monitor).
frame rate to that healthy refresh rate, while the second screen is a six-inch 1080p touchscreen that’s cleverly nestled above the keyboard. It’s kind of like a Nintendo DS for PC gamers, albeit with a much higher resolution and a lot more grunt. The double-screen benefit? Multi- application interaction while you get down to the business of gaming on the main display. Despite this extra screen, the X 2S boasts a sleek design and won’t break your bag lugging it around. The slim-but-light theme continues with the new model HP OMEN 15, built for mobile fragging. It’s packing a 15-inch Full HD 144Hz monitor for crisp visuals care of the GeForce RTX 2060 GPU. When you’re not
stuck under headphones in the online foray, the OMEN 15’s singing at you with Bang & Olufsen dual speakers. Chuck in 16GB of RAM, a 512GB PCIe M.2 SSD and an i7-950H CPU, and the OMEN 15 is designed to
have you spend less time on a loading screen and more time gaming.
