HEALTH SMARTS

Nowadays, looking after our own health and well-being – and that of our friends and family – is more important than ever. Australians have always loved the idea of combining fitness and health with leisure. We’re a nation of avid runners, bike riders and swimmers and, when we’re at home, we want to take care of ourselves and make the most of our free time. PAMPER THE BODY AND MIND

If you’re the kind of person that loves to get out and about – whether it’s a morning run, quality time being walked by the dog, or the day-to-day of work, shopping and socialising – a smart watch is a must-have. Notifications and calls can be seen at a glance without having to pull out your phone, and the display can be set up to show not just the time, but all kinds of other information - from the weather to the song playing in your earbuds. And instantly paying for stuff with a wave of your watch never gets old. Most smart watch models also offer a range of health and well- being features, with some taking on the role of personal trainer by offering workout routines, cardio monitoring, sleep, daily wellness activities, female health tracking, breathing exercises and more, all linked with health apps on your phone so you can see at a glance how you’re doing.

Some smart watches are primarily designed for fitness use, while others are more geared towards daily life. Choose one that fits your lifestyle. PICK UP: A charging stand to make it easy to keep your watch topped up at the end of the day.

JB’s Top Tips

SLEEP WELL The most essential thing for a healthy mind and body is a good night’s sleep – but some of us have trouble unwinding from the day and shutting out the sounds of the city. Many people try wearing earplugs or even listening to music in earbuds, but these aren’t great solutions – and can be uncomfortable to sleep with. Now, though, there are dedicated sleep buds which have only one job – to shut out the world, play you soothing sounds and get you a great night’s sleep, complete with the sounds of nature, or just soothing neutral tones. For regular earbuds, though, there are multiple apps ready to deliver endless calming soundscapes.

A CUT ABOVE Looking good means feeling good, and it’s never been easier to manage your hair at home with the huge range of professional- grade tools that put you in complete control of how you look. For men, there have been major advances in the tech behind that most essential of devices, the electric shaver. The best ones now have on-board intelligence that can monitor the shave and adjust the cut accordingly. Personal care can go so much further at home now, too. Dedicated beard trimmers take the guesswork and hassle out of a process that used to be time-consuming, and trimmers (supplied with an arsenal of different tools) and clippers are both affordable and incredibly capable. And for the perfect finish, hair styling and smart toothbrushes have come a long way, too.
