PODCASTING
Podcasts are taking over, quietly dethroning traditional media – and the best part is anyone can start one. In this section, we break down the essentials: what you need, how to get started, and smart ways to produce a standout show without blowing your budget. Words Glenn Cochrane
The essential tech The first and most obvious investment is a microphone. If you’re just starting out, a simple headset or basic mic can work, but upgrading to a microphone with decent noise control will noticeably improve your sound. The options are many, including condenser, dynamic, wireless clip-on, and USB microphones. For first-time podcasters, a USB mic is often the easiest option, plugging straight into your computer without the need for extra equipment. Keeping your setup simple allows you to focus on content and find your voice. Podcasting is a journey, and most successful shows have grown and evolved over time. Listening back to early episodes of popular podcasts is a good reminder that everyone starts somewhere. Recording and editing are also a key part of the process. While big podcasts may have production teams, beginners usually handle everything themselves. Thankfully, there’s plenty of recording and editing software available, including free options and tools with built-in AI features to make the process easier. The key is to start within your budget and build from there.
Podcasts have well and truly gone mainstream, with millions of people tuning in for everything from news and current affairs to comedy, true crime, masterclasses, and niche passions. There’s no subject a podcast can’t explore. The key ingredients for a successful podcast are knowledge, quality, and consistency. Personality also goes a long way. Whether you’re a solo host or part of a group, having a strong grasp of your topic helps keep listeners engaged and coming back for more. Podcasts can take many forms, from long form interviews to short, punchy reviews. There’s no right or wrong format, but a clear focus and genuine interest in your subject What are you actually creating?
matter make a big difference. Once you’ve decided what you want to talk about, the next step is making sure you have the right tech in place (see below). Just as important is setting a realistic release schedule. Will episodes drop weekly, fortnightly, or monthly? Listeners value reliability, so it’s better to commit to a pace you can maintain than to promise more than you can deliver. Podcasting can be fun and rewarding, and starting with an audio-only show is a great way to test the waters. Most hosting platforms make it easy to distribute your show to major services like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube.
