W ith the release of his 1975 album Tonight’s The Night , Neil Young confirmed his reputation as the most uncom promising songwriter/performer of his generation. If he’d stuck to the Harvest approach he could have had more hits. But as he famously proclaimed, the middle of the road was a bore. The songs on this disturbing album were inspired by the drug-related deaths of his Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry. In what turned out to be a wake, Young is backed by the Crazy Horse rhythm section, guitarist/pianist Nils Lofgren and steel guitarist Ben Keith on 12 grief-stricken songs book ended by two versions of the title song. Tired Eyes , Borrowed Tune , and Lookout Joe – a warning to GIs returning from Vietnam – and a live 1970 track Come on Baby Let’s Go Downtown (with a lead vocal from Danny Whitten paying tribute to another drug casualty) is rock music at its most potent. There is one song that could have been a Harvest contender: Roll Another Number (For the Road) , with its country feel, an assertive steel guitar and wry Woodstock reference – “I’m not going back to Woodstock for a while, I don’t believe I’ll be going back that way.” In 1992, Neil would release Harvest Moon , a sequel to his biggest-selling album.
